Gray’s Inn lies to the north of the street known as High Holborn, corrupted in London speech to ‘Ho’b'n’, means the Hole Bourne, the stream flowing into the Fleet River which ran down the valley now occupied by Farringdon Street and out into the Thames at Blackfriars.
