FIELD COURT
Leading west out of Gray's Inn Square, past the recently rebuilt common room, an archway gives access to Field Court which contains two handsome eighteen-century houses facing the fine iron railings bordering the Walks. Next to the houses a gateway leads the pedestrian into Fulwood Place and so back to High Holborn. The gateway carries stone griffins. Affixed to a wall hard by are two notices saying 'Ancient Light', signifying that the building had acquired a prescriptive right to light (and air) at that point and putting any prospective builder on notice that he would interfere with that right at his peril. Such notices used to be quite common but are now rarely seen, outside the Law Reports.
